Date Square and Coffee

Date square, this sweet and nourishing dessert that has passed down generations! Renew this tradition with our recipe incorporating a touch of coffee and date sugar!

Ingredients :

For garnish :

  • 560 ml (2 ¼ cups) pitted and chopped dates (lightly packed)
  • 250 ml (1 cup) of coffee
  • 30 ml (2 tbsp) orange juice
  • 30 ml (2 tbsp.) date sugar
  • 2.5 ml (½ tsp) baking soda

For the crunch:

  • 310 ml (1 ¼ cups) quick-cooking oatmeal
  • 200 g unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 160 g (¾ cup) date sugar
  • 1 ml (¼ tsp) baking powder
  • 170 g (¾ cup) semi-salted butter, softened

Preparation :

  1. Place the grill at the center of the oven.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  3. Butter a 20 cm (8 in) square mold and line with a strip of parchment paper, leaving it overhanging on two sides.

FOR GARNISH :

  1. In a saucepan, bring the dates, water, coffee and date sugar to a boil.
  2. Add the bicarbonate and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, or until the dates are pureed.
  3. Leave to cool.

FOR THE CRISPY:

In a bowl, mix the oatmeal, flour, date sugar and baking powder. Add the butter and mix well.

Spread half of the crust in the mold and press firmly. Spread the date garnish. Cover with the rest of the crust and press lightly.

Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown.

Leave to cool on a rack for 4 hours. Unmold and cut into squares.

Serve with our date syrup as a glaze or to decorate your plate and with a good coffee or with our Coeur de dates beverage (caffeine-free)!
